Information Systems in Health Care

Prof. Dr. Heidrun Ortleb

During this course we learn how to use PHP to interact with the free MySQL to create fully dynamic and database-driven sites in one of the health care fields.

PHP is one of the easiest server-side scripting languages and most powerful yet for creating dynamic and interactive websites. It is widely-used, free, and offers interaction with databases like MySQL. The database management system MySQL itself is commonly used. PHP is a server-side language and can be embedded directly into the HTML code. This means that the script is running on your web server, not on the user’s browser, so you do not need to worry about compatibility issues. PHP is relatively new (compared to languages such as Perl (CGI) and Java) but is quickly getting one of the most popular scripting languages on the internet.

I will show you some of the basics of using PHP and MySQL together. We will use an example on the health area all the way through. After this course you should have enough knowledge to go on and create nearly every type of database enabled site you want to.

The course will have theoretical as well as practical parts. Before you actually start building your database application, you must have a model of your data. For modelling we use the Entity-Relationship-Model. This model has to be transferred in a real database, that’s used to place information into and read it from. You will learn how to create a database in MySQL and prepare it for the data.

You should have basic knowledge about HTML and databases.
