    • Are you interested in an exciting and varied working life?
    • Do you enjoy engaging in in-depth discussions with like-minded people?
    • Do you enjoy combining academic teaching and research with experience from your professional practice?
    • Then apply for a professorship at Jade University of Applied Sciences!

    Teaching

Teaching plays a key role in the role of a professor: you will work closely with students in small groups. Application-oriented and seminar-based teaching enables you to respond individually to the strengths and weaknesses of each student. In addition to the regular semester examinations, you will also supervise final-year projects.

For a full-time professorship, the teaching load is 18 semester hours per week. Reductions in teaching hours may be granted to allow for the pursuit of research projects and the fulfilment of committee duties.

    Research

Independent research is becoming increasingly important at universities of applied sciences and is often carried out in close collaboration with (regional) businesses. By maintaining close links with the business community, we ensure the transfer of knowledge from the university to the workplace. Here, you can set your own research priorities and benefit from your professional experience and personal networks.

    Academic self-governance

There are many opportunities for you within academic self-governance: through your involvement, for example on the Faculty Council, the Senate or on appointment committees, you can play an active role in shaping the future direction of Jade University of Applied Sciences.

    Requirements

To become a professor at a University of Applied Sciences (HAW), you must meet certain formal recruitment requirements, which are laid down in the Higher Education Act of the relevant federal state. For Jade University of Applied Sciences, these are set out as follows in Section 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG):

    • A completed university degree.
    • Pedagogical and didactic aptitude, confirmed by practical experience.
    • A particular aptitude for in-depth academic work, which is generally demonstrated by an above-average doctoral degree. Alternatively, achievements equivalent to a doctoral degree may be taken into account, for example through relevant publications, outstanding or independent research projects, particularly as project leader or sub-project leader (for example, third-party funding secured).
    • Outstanding achievements in the application or development of academic knowledge and methods gained through at least five years’ professional experience, of which at least three years must have been spent outside the higher education sector. Part-time employment of at least 50 per cent of the standard working hours are fully recognised for this purpose, and the work need not have been carried out continuously.
    • In addition to the formal requirements, position-specific requirements for the professorship must also be met.

If you have any questions regarding the formal recruitment requirements, you will find further information on the Appointments Management page. You will also find further guidance on appointment procedures and tips on applying there.

    Appeals procedure

Professorships are filled through appointment procedures as follows

    1. An appointments committee formed by the relevant department is responsible for drawing up a recommendation for appointment.
    2. Following a public call for applications, the committee members carry out a thorough review and assessment of the applications received.
    3. Shortlisted candidates are then invited to deliver a trial lecture and attend an interview.
    4. The committee then draws up an appointment proposal, ranking the most suitable candidates, drawing on external expert opinions where appropriate.
    5. After consulting the relevant bodies at the university, Jade University submits a reasoned appointment proposal to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture.
    6. If the Ministry offers the post, appointment negotiations then take place between the successful candidate and the university.

This structured process ensures that the best candidates are selected in accordance with the law and generally takes several months. Accordingly, it may take some time before you receive a response to your application. To find out about the current status of appointment procedures, you can use the monitoring system.

    Application

Each vacancy specifies a set of professional requirements that are rarely met to the letter. Before applying, assess your skills and experience realistically; if you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Dean of the Faculty or the individuals listed below.

    • a covering letter setting out your motivation for applying and your assessment of how well you meet the required profile
    • a tabular CV detailing additional qualifications, IT and language skills, voluntary roles, memberships (e.g. in professional associations), time spent raising children and similar commitments.
