Where to live and what to do - all tips

Jade University of Applied Sciences is located on three campuses. Here you can find useful tips and links about student life in Wilhelmshaven, Oldenburg and Elsfleth.

Wilhelmshaven

Leisure time

The only South-facing beach on the North German coast is in Wilhelmshaven (population 80,000). Students in the town can enjoy the sunshine in their breaks or after lectures on the beach promenade or at Banter Lake. In the autumn, they can take a walk along the dyke and let the wind clear their heads. There's also plenty to do in the centre of town with its neat shopping street and the "Nordseepassage" shopping centre that offers 60 shops, cafes, restaurants and the train station.

Film fans in Wilhelmshaven have a choice between the cinemas UCI Kino or AstA-Kino. There are regular parties and concerts in the Kulturzentrum Pumpwerk. Other places to go out include pubs and cafes around the main square, the Börsenplatz, and on the beach promenade. Not forgetting the regular parties staged by the AstA student organisation at the university and other locations nearby.

Accommodation

The accommodation market in Wilhelmshaven is extremely varied, with everything from one-room apartments to large flatshares available on the various portals. Apart from cheap flats on the private market, you can also apply for low-cost rooms in the Wiesenhof student hall of residence right next to the campus and the Ansgari campus at the residential area "Südstadt".

Sport

There's a wide variety of sports on offer in various clubs - including of course water sports. Among the broad range of facilities are a surfing school, golf course, lidos, plus tennis and squash courts.

Oldenburg

Leisure Time

The city of Oldenburg (population 160,000) is the cultural and economic centre of the North-West region. Everything is within easy cycling reach in this bike-friendly city, which helps make it a great place to study and live. Included among the advantages are centrally located accommodation, some 80 restaurants, pubs and cafes, shopping to rival big city standards, plus the location surrounded by green countryside and close to the North Sea.

There's also a rich cultural scene with a large number of museums and galleries, cinemas, theatres and venues such as Kulturetage, PFL, Wilhelm 13, Polyester and Umbaubar Green oases like the Castle Gardens or the Botanical Gardens in Philosophenweg host cultural events as well as offering space to relax in the middle of the city. Students of Jade University of Applied Sciences are entitled to free admission to the Horst-Janssen-Museum, Edith-Russ-Haus für Medienkunstand Stadtmuseum Oldenburg

"Pub culture" in Oldenburg also comes in a lively and exciting variety. In the restaurants, cafes, bars and bistros in and around the vibrant city centre there's something for everybody. Especially popular is "Students’ Night" every Wednesday, with free entry to clubs and special prices for drinks. For an overview of events and current nightlife, see the culture magazine MOX.

Another highlight for students is the "Night of the Profs": Once a year in November, some 30 professors from Jade University of Applied Sciences and Oldenburg University take over the turntables in popular Oldenburg clubs. The professors in Wilhelmshaven also regularly lay down the beats for their students.

Accommodation

In Oldenburg there are various ways of finding somewhere to live, e.g. in the centrally located student halls of residence run by the Studentenwerk Oldenburg or other bodies such as the Hermann-Ehlers-Haus or the Oscar-Romero-Haus . Other offers can be found on the noticeboards in the Jade University or Oldenburg University as well as in the local paper, the NWZ (Tuesdays and Saturdays).

Sport

Jade University students can also use the sports facilities of the Carl-von-Ossietzky-University Oldenburg, mostly free of charge. From belly dancing to jiu-jitsu to volleyball - there's something for everybody.

Elsfleth

Leisure time

The favourable location of Elsfleth (population 10,000) at the junction of the rivers Weser and Hunte near the North Sea is the reason for its rich maritime tradition and strong links to marine transport and shipbuilding. With the largest maritime university facility in Western Europe, the small town of Elsfleth is known not only in nautical circles. Far removed from the anonymity of a city, the town and campus make it easy for new arrivals to feel at home.

You'll find everything you need right on your doorstep. The highlight of the event calendar for Elsfleth's students is without doubt the Maritime Festival held by the Maritime and Logistics Studies Department every May. The day starts with a boat race on the river Hunte, continues with an international football competition, and ends early next morning after a long party. Also nearby and not to be missed are the North Sea coast as well as the cities of Oldenburg and Bremen.

Accommodation

Accommodation offers are available on the web pages of the Maritime Management and Logistics Department in Elsfleth.

Sport

The student body of the Maritime Management Department organises an attractive sports programme for Elsfleth's students. Included here for instance are tennis, handball, horse riding and swimming.
